We grow a variety of vegetables for our CSA, local farmer s markets, restaurants, and for our market on site. Our retail
building on the farm is designed to suite the SC climate, minimize site and environmental impact, and is seeking LEED certification. In our green
house we raise tilapia and produce micro-greens. bee hives for both pollination purposes and for honey. We have a variety of chickens that we free range and move in our chicken tractor. We have a large scale composting operation which aides to the fertility of our soil and is also used for growing several specialty mushrooms. Even our street trees that are required by the city' s zoning produce fruit. One of the key factors in starting our farm is an education component and a community out reach program. City Roots provides farm tours for local schools, universities, and the public and offers a workshop series. 2011 South Carolina Farm of the Year -- winner in the Small Farm competition.
Thompson Farm and Nursery: Where Traditions Continue to Grow
Based on the successful operation of the greenhouses and the changing economic outlook, Thompson Farm looked back to the principles the farm had always held. Using those principles, in 2009 Thompson Farm and Nursery opened to the general public by adding farm tours for groups and other marketing events. Tour groups include public schools in the area. Students visit Daisy' s Planting Shed where we offer classes that meet South Carolina educational standards and teach students about planting, insects, and life cycles of farm animals.
Thompson Farm and Nursery is currently operated by a fourth generation on over 200 acres. The crops include tomatoes, bell peppers, strawberries, onions, corn, oats, and potatoes. The greenhouses continue to supply a wide variety of plant material to local homeowners' associations as well as other nurseries in the area. A third greenhouse was added in 2008 for the purpose of growing produce hydroponically. By offering such a diverse selection of products, the farm is able to remain profitable and offer a unique experience to children and adults.
Throughout its history, Thompson Farm has adapted to keep up with technology and the changing demands of the consumer. During economic uncertainty, to which farming is not invulnerable, the family has diversified to include public education and followed the ideology of the importance of locally grown vegetables and other plants.

Set aside in 1974 as an ecological sanctuary and land trust, it has developed into an educational center for sharing positive strategies of local self-reliance in the areas of environmental design, organic food production, renewable energy, shelter design and construction, appropriate technology, resource conservation, recycling, wildlife protection and improved environmental quality. Edible landscape, Permaculture Design, Trout aquaculture, edible forest gardens, organic gardens, berry and tree crop nurseries.
Number of Positions Available: 4
Job Description: Internships and Volunteer Opportunities at Long Branch Environmental Education Center
Former Interns with Long Branch have received academic credit from the University of North Carolina -- Asheville, University of Vermont, University of Maryland, Drew University, University of Dayton, Prescott College, and Warren Wilson College in Asheville, NC. We are currently seeking affiliations with other colleges and universities to be able to offer Interns other options for academic credit.
The Center offers three main tracks for our internship program:
l. Ecological Agriculture,
2. Sustainable or "Green" Building Design, Energy Efficiency, and Practicum,
3. Ecological Restoration with native plant, shrub, and tree species.
l. Ecological Agriculture, including:
* Organic Growing techniques, including utilization of wild edibles and edible flowers
* Edible Landscaping, including insectary and nitrogen-fixing plant species,
* Permaculture Design, an integrated approach to land use providing for ecological conservation, and sustainable food, fuel, fiber, building material, and fodder production,
* Aquaculture system design, operation, use of native species to attract native insectary feedstock, research, management and marketing analysis on native Brook trout being raised at the Center,
* Biological horticulture in Attached Passive Solar Greenhouses,
* Native plant propagation and nursery management.
2. Sustainable or "Green" Building Design and Practicum
The future of conservation of natural resources and native ecosystems will not rest solely on precarious public good will or enlightened political policies, that may sometimes subject to change.
In a sustainable way, human beings will need to be able to meet their basic needs of fresh air, pure water, wholesome food, robust health, energy-efficient and resource-efficient shelter, climate-sensitive clothing, renewable energy systems, and open communication technologies.
Interns will learn the basics of sustainable design in the context of overall ecosystem management, focusing on the design principles that emphasize cooperation with natural energy and resource flows rather than engineering systems to dominate or duplicate natural systems.
3. Ecological Restoration with native plant, shrub, and tree species:
Propagation of Southern Appalachian native plant and tree species and restoration of these species into appropriate ecological niches on the Center's 1635-acre ecological laboratory.
Interns will learn a variety of propagation techniques including direct seeding, grafting, and tissue culture.
Additionally, native plant, shrub, and tree species will be available to the public, National Parks, National Forests, State Parks, and State Gamelands.
Invasive exotic species identification will described in detail, and strategies for biological controls of these ecological problems will be demonstrated.
Qualifications: good physical health, open mind, ability to work with others, good sense of humor!
Salary or Compensation: volunteer and/or internship
Application Instructions: To apply, email with statement of background, education, skills, interests, and vision for the future. Send email for further details on track program curriculum.

Farm Description: Bluebird Hill is a USDA Certified Organic small farm that emphasizes herbs, specialty vegetables, cut flowers, plants, value-added farm crafts and food products, and incorporates the principles of permaculture to maximize the use of space. We grow many types of fruits and vegetables, emphasizing diversity and quality over quantity. We are always experimenting with new crops, - things like hops, kiwi, cranberries, citrus, ginger, and others not often seen in our area. We host Parties, weddings, picnics, and photo shoots. We also have group workshops in growing and using herbs, exploring their requirements and ways to combine them with flowers and the landscape. Visitors select their own, and bring them into the kitchen with us to prepare and cook with them. We have 500 lavender plants, host a harvest day, and make a number of distilled lavender products. Our intern should have a broad range of interests that include food safety and dietary issues, plant culture and culinary uses, landscape and construction projects, farmer's markets, CSA, and managing people. We provide a private living space with refrigerator, stove, toilet/shower, eating, and sleeping facilities.
Number of Positions Available: 2 if a couple (preferred)
Job Description: Individual or couple to take part in all aspects of farm operation: Cultivating, planting, weeding, mowing, insect control, harvesting, selling at farmer's market, drying and packaging products.
Learn about plant culture and growth habit, organic practices (we were Certified Organic July 2010), sustainable agriculture, intensive planting, companion planting and medicinal/culinary uses for plants and herbs.
Qualifications: Must be willing to work hard, although if the temps are in the 90/100s, we will work early and late, but not in middle of the day. Good people skills are important, since we host visitors to the farm and attend farmer's market. Must be interested in the WHY of growing organically, not just in the HOW. Strong physically, mature emotionally, intelligent and environmentally concerned individuals preferred.
Salary or Compensation: Camper in private location near small pond. Picnic table, trees. If you are interested in landscaping or personalizing your area, feel free. You have gas stove, refrigerator, toilet/shower combo, and small closet space. Sleeping area at one end and table/booth seats at other end. Will sometimes eat together. Garden produce available, will supply eggs, bread, soap, TP, linens, towels, dishes, cookware, and other necessities. Interns cook most meals themselves in their private residence. Stipend: 200.00 per month plus necessities. Laundry facilities available, no charge.

Farm Description: We are an Animal Welfare Approved farmstead goat cheese dairy; we produce goat cheese, goat meat, bread using our whey, and cheesecakes using our chevre.
Number of Positions Available: 1
Job Description: We're looking for a farm hand/milker. This position is largely outdoors, except for milking. Every week, portable electric fencing must be set up and taken down to move three groups of goats. As the weather cools, we' ll be working on infrastructure projects: installing permanent fencing, milling lumber, repairing farm buildings, trimming hooves, giving vaccinations, mucking shelters.
Qualifications: The work requires you to be physically fit, both in the ability to walk a lot, and to lift 50 pounds (feed bags, bales of straw) repeatedly. You' ll need to be attentive to details of many kinds: is that goat acting differently today than it does usually? Is that doe looking like she might kid today? Was the electricity for the fence turned back on? Have you followed the proper cleaning steps, each and every time, in the milking room? We expect you to have good follow-through in completing tasks, and to communicate with us to ensure that we take next steps as necessary based what' s happened on your watch. We have early shifts (starting at 7 a.m., occasionally earlier if weather requires) and late shifts (ending at 8 p.m.), and you may be doing some of each.
Salary or Compensation: We have a live-in spot available, with food and a stipend, or we can pay hourly. We expect 40 hours a week, occasionally a bit more (with additional pay) in busy times. We are growing rapidly, and it' s a great opportunity to observe the many issues that a growing value-added farm-based business must confront. We look for congenial, conscientious people who will work well with others, and join our quest to be the best "in our field". We don' t expect you to have past dairy experience, though some farm experience is useful, and, as mentioned earlier, good physical fitness is essential. Bonus points if you aren't allergic to poison ivy. Oh, and you get to eat/take home some rather tasty cheese, cheesecake, bread and meat, and sometimes you're asked to be a guinea pig for new recipes.
Application Instructions: Please email us with your name, phone, details of your education and work experience, your physical fitness, and contact info for 2 references so we can learn what you'll be like to work (and potentially live) with. Please also (1) tell us about any relevant life experience including any special skills/experience (carpentry, animal husbandry, mechanic/repair, chain-sawing, cooking, etc), and (2) tell us about yourself in your own words and be sure to include WHY you are interested in this internship, including what you hope to accomplish by being here.
