Community-Based Food Systems Workshop
Why develop a community based food system? A look at today's headlines tells the story: fewer farms and farmers, hard-pressed rural communities, the need for economic development and job creation, high fuel prices, threatened natural resources, lack of access to fresh and nutrition foods in some communities, and epidemics of obesity and diabetes.
Local food systems promote entrepreneurial activities by farms, markets, and supporting businesses. They help citizens take initiative in improving the environmental, social, physical, and economic health of their communities.
Get started August 25! You?ll come away with practical first steps including how to conduct a local food assessment; how to form a local food council; how to develop new markets--retail and wholesale; how to support new farmers and new local food entrepreneurs; and how to understand policies that hinder and help build strong local food systems.
Workshop Registration Fee: $45 includes local lunch (scholarships available?application form on CEFS calendar page below)
A wonderful slate of speakers is scheduled: visit the CEFS website for a Listing of speakers and registration details: www.cefs.ncsu.edu/calendar2008.htm

The Politics of Food-The ELP Food Tour National Conference
How can we promote a food system that is environmentally sustainable, socially just, and economically viable?
The Environmental Leadership Program (ELP) invites you to "The Politics of Food," a national conference on how America grows, distributes, buys, and eats its food.
ELP's Politics of Food national conference will engage participants in a challenging exploration of how and why our food system works as it does, whether it is secure, just, and sustainable, and how it might be reshaped for the future. The conference will provide an interactive forum that enables attendees to make new connections and share information around the common goal of developing visionary, yet practical, solutions to local and national food-related challenges.
North Carolina State University Park Scholarships and Department of Food Science will co-host the "Politics of Food" conference. North Carolinas rich and diverse agricultural heritage has put it at the crux of the challenges facing modern agriculture, and this setting provides a terrific opportunity to explore strategies that North Carolina communities and businesses are using to build a more sustainable food system from the ground up.
